Silver and Gold

“But Peter said, ‘I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!’ ” – Acts 3:6 (ESV)

I was reading through Acts 3 this morning and stopped for a bit at this passage. As Peter and John are about to enter the temple, they see a man who had been lame all his life near the gate. The man makes eye contact with them and at this point probably expected to receive some money from the apostles. But Peter instead offers the man something much greater – “the power of God unto salvation” (Rom. 1:16). Through the power of Jesus, the man received the ability to walk. The man’s response was beautiful – “And leaping up he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.” (v.8).

We might not have silver and gold to offer to others either. But we do have the Gospel. Let’s find ways today to share that with others around us !

How fortunate it was for the beggar that Peter and John didn’t have any silver of gold. I think too often churches throw money at problems instead of calling on the healing power of the spirit. However, it is important to find a balance between providing for people’s physical needs (Jesus often did) and their spiritual needs.
