“O LORD, how many are my foes!
Many are rising against me;
many are saying of my soul,
there is no salvation for him in God.” – Psalm 3:1-2 (ESV)
What a distressing time this was in the life of King David, as his own son Absalom was plotting to make himself king and take the throne. How disheartening it must have been for David to watch what was going on around him, and wondering at that point who he could count on. But David made it clear in this Psalm who he placed his real trust in.
He cried out to God, and God answered him (v.4). With enemies and schemers all around, David was able to lie down and sleep, as God sustained him (v.5). It was then that David could declare confidently, “I will not be afraid of many thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around.” (v. 6).
What a wonderful Psalm from David, and a reminder to keep looking upward. God will answer you. God will sustain you.
