There Is A Reason

The people walking in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
a light has dawned.” – Isaiah 9:2 (NIV)

Well another Black Friday has come and gone, which marks the official start of the holiday shopping frenzy. I’m not sure why I’m so surprised at the stories about it the day after, but I’m still amazed anyway. Amy Letinsky has a good post on this phenomenon over on her blog. Here are a couple of other stories from the New York newspapers this past weekend:

The New York Daily News: “People were trying to break in the employee entrance,” said a worker at Macy’s. Said one shopper, “People need to stop fighting. I was over on the other side and two women were screaming over a case of towels that cost $ 2.00. It’s crazy.”

The New York Post: “People are shoving the kids, hitting them with their coats and bags. It’s a nightmare, especially with a toddler. Never again will I go shopping on Black Friday,” said one shopper.

This is the true meaning of Christmas ???

In some ways, I’m guilty of this too, because I get busy myself this time of year with shopping, gift-wrapping, Christmas cards, etc. I can spend so much time trying to find the perfect gift or the right card for someone that I don’t slow down enough. Of course, there is a reason we are celebrating at this time of the year, and it has nothing to do with this frenzy of sales or shopping.

It’s not hard to find Christmas music on the radio now. In fact, it’s been playing on some stations since the beginning of November, so if you want to hear The Chipmunks’ Christmas Song for the millionth time, you’re in luck. Alison Krauss has a beautiful song called “There Is A Reason” that’s not a Christmas song, but one that I think fits better than most of what’s playing on those stations now. Maybe if it were piped in to the malls over the next month or so, it might help everyone put down those $2.00 cases of towels and stop breaking into Macy’s entrances.

We can hope anyway 🙂

I’ve seen hard times and I’ve been told
There isn’t any wonder that I fall
Why do we suffer, crossing off the years
There must be a reason for it all

I’ve trusted in You, Jesus, to save me from my sin
Heaven is the place I call my home
But I keep on getting caught up in this world I’m living in
And Your voice it sometimes fades before I know

Hurtin’ brings my heart to You, crying with my need
Depending on Your love to carry me
The love that shed His blood for all the world to see
This must be the reason for it all

Hurtin’ brings my heart to You, a fortress in the storm
When what I wrap my heart around is gone
I give my heart so easily to the ruler of this world
When the one who loves me most will give me all

In all the things that cause me pain You give me eyes to see
I do believe but help my unbelief
I’ve seen hard times and I’ve been told
There is a reason for it all
