For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.” – Luke 21:15 (NIV)
Next up on my reading list is a short book by John Piper called “Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ”. I downloaded this book from the Desiring God website, where you can find a tremendous amount of Dr. Piper’s sermons, books, and other items. This is one of my favorite sites. Dr. Piper and his staff are very gracious to offer these materials for free.
I’m now up to chapter 6 of the book, which focuses on the wisdom of Jesus. Dr. Piper explains how all of our worldly knowledge amounts to just a “dewdrop on a blade of grass” (p. 55) when compared with the infinite knowledge found in Our Lord and Savior.
Check out this quote…I love this:
“Even if we are impressed with the scholarship of man and the achievements of scientific knowledge, let us not play the fool by trumpeting the wonder of these tiny chirps while ignoring the thunderclap of Christ’s omniscience” (p.55).
Dr. Piper always explains things so passionately. And it was a great illustration for me. For example, I’m in grad school and really enjoy my coursework. I also love studying history and politics (and football :)). But while studying these things have their own merits, they fall infinitely short of true wisdom in the end. Our Lord knows all – past, present and future. And in Him our greatest wisdom is found.
“Father…grant us your wisdom in the measure we can bear” – John Piper
